Your poster has arrived, but which frame goes with it? Search for the wrong size and you end up with a frame where the poster slips around or does not fit at all. Here is what matters.
The inner size is what counts
Frames are sold by the size of their opening, not their outer edge. For a 30 × 45 cm poster, you need a frame with an inner size of 30 × 45 cm. Check the inner size in the listing before you buy, because not every size is standard everywhere.

With or without a mat?
A mat is the light card between poster and frame. It gives the artwork room to breathe and looks especially refined with small posters and calm motifs. You will need a larger frame for it. The outer size of the mat must match the frame, and the opening should be slightly smaller than your poster so the edge rests on it.
Colour and material
- Black: creates clear contrast, good for graphic art and photography.
- White: understated, suits light walls and pastel tones.
- Wood: feels warm, good for botanical, vintage and japandi styles.
On a gallery wall, using one frame colour usually looks calmer.
Getting the poster into the frame
- Let a rolled poster rest flat under some weight for a while.
- Clean the glass or acrylic before you insert the poster.
- Hold the paper by its edges only.
